The family dispute over Sona Comstar’s assets intensified after Rani Kapur, mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, challenged the validity of her son’s purported will in the Delhi High Court. Rani, 80, has raised concerns about the handling of her son’s estate, saying she was kept completely in the dark about important documents.
As per Hindustan Times, during Wednesday’s hearing, Rani’s lawyer alleged that the late businessman’s mother had not been informed about any paperwork related to his will. “There is something incredibly unholy. Rs 10,000 crore worth of assets should have been mine,” he told the court. He added that Rani had sent at least 15 emails asking for information about the will, but did not receive a single response.
Senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, appearing for Rani Kapur, also revealed details about Sona Comstar assets being sold were withheld. “What is also important is that there are assets of Sona Comstar which have been sold. We don’t know who sold them. Shares worth Rs 500 crore were sold to a Singapore entity. My lords, none of the documents were shared with me,” Gaggar said, according to Bar and Bench.
In response, the Delhi High Court has directed all parties involved to declare a complete list of assets as of June 12, the date of Sunjay Kapur’s death. The court heard the plea filed by Sunjay’s children, Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur, against their father’s second wife, Priya Sachdeva. The siblings have accused Priya of ‘forging and fabricating’ the will, raising doubts about the distribution of the late businessman’s property, as per Hindustan Times.
The case also names Priya’s son, Rani Kapur, and Shradha Suri Marwah, the purported executor of a will dated March 21, 2025. Allegations in the case include conspiracy, forgery, and financial irregularities, making it one of the most complex family inheritance disputes in recent times.
Rani Kapur raises foul play concerns
Since Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death in June, Rani Kapur has suggested that foul play may have been involved. She even wrote to UK authorities, requesting an investigation into his death and urging them to rule out natural causes. Rani has cited possible murder, conspiracy, and financial fraud as potential reasons behind her son’s untimely passing.
Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has also raised concerns. “There was a simple request from my mother. We have gone through the loss of a family member. For us, it was my mum’s son; for me, it was a brother. When was his last medical test done? Did he check his heart? My mum asks me every day, how did this happen? He was fit. Who is giving her answers?” Mandhira told ANI.
Court orders asset disclosure
The Delhi High Court’s order to declare all assets as of the date of Sunjay Kapur’s death is expected to bring some clarity to the ongoing dispute. As the legal battle continues, the court will need to examine the allegations of forgery, conspiracy, and mismanagement, while ensuring that the estate is handled transparently and fairly. With assets worth thousands of crores at stake, all eyes are now on how the case unfolds in the coming hearings.
