Padmaavat movie release date: The release date of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming historical drama ‘Padmaavat’ was confirmed on Sunday by its lead cast. Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the makers of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”, had yesterday announced that the film will hit the screens on January 25. The film will be released in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. According to the release, it is the first Indian film that will have a global IMAX 3D release. It has been cleared for release by the CBFC with a U/A release certificate post the incorporation of only five modifications. The cast including Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and others shared a post on their Twitter handle saying, “Get ready to witness the epic tale #Padmaavat on 25th January 2018, in theatres near you!Now also in 3D, Imax 3D, Tamil & Telugu!”

The film features Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji. The film was mired in controversy after various Rajput groups, including the Rajput Karni Sena, raised their objections to its content.

1. Towards the end of 2017, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had cleared decks for the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati. The board held an examining committee meeting on December 28 where they decided to allow the film to release with a UA certificate.

2. While the film got its clearance for release, the CBFC had asked for several cuts and a change in the film’s title, from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’. This was done owing to the fact that the film is inspired by 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The makers were also asked to add a disclaimer stating that the film does not glorify the banned practice of Sati. The relevant changes were made to the song Ghoomar in keeping with the character essayed by Deepika Padukone, that of a Rajput princess.

3. On January 12, over 70 activists of the Rajasthan-based Karni Sena were detained while protesting outside the Central Board of Film Certification’s office against the clearance given to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”, earlier titled “Padmavati”.

4. As soon as the release date of Padmaavat ‘January 25th’ was made public, the release of the film was banned in Rajasthan by CM Vasundhara Raje and later by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani in their respective states.

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Prasoon Joshi in a media address refuted a report that the “modifications” demanded by the censor board in the historical drama has resulted in 300 cuts. “The makers have submitted the final film with agreed five modifications which has already been communicated and a U/A certificate has been been given to the film. CBFC’s process is complete and any further news about cuts is absolutely untrue. Let’s refrain from utilising CBFC’s name unnecessarily,” Joshi told IANS.
