Rishab Shetty‘s Kantara Chapter 1, the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, continues to rule hearts even after its digital release. On Day 33, the film’s domestic collections stood at Rs 612.29 crore, a remarkable feat for the film. Produced by Hombale films, the film’s cast included Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Deviah, Pramod Shetty, Jayaram, Kanakavathi, and Rakesh Poojari among others. Made on a much higher budget of Rs 125 crore compared to the original Kantara, which was produced for just Rs 16 crore, the film took some time to recover its costs at the box office.
Did Kantara Chapter 1 OTT release affect the film’s performance?
After shattering multiple records, the film was recently released on Prime Video in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages. While many expected its earning to nosedive, it continued to mint money on the weekend following its digital release on Friday, October 31.
How the film performed over the weekend
On November 1 and 2, the film earned Rs 3.6 crore on each day with occupancy rate seeing a surge of 95%, compared to week days, as per trade website Sacnilk. What’s remarkable is that the mythological-thriller continues to be a crowd puller despite multiple releases like Thamma, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, Baahubali: The Epic, and Dude, among others.
The festive release that hit the theatres on October 2, on Dussehra or Vijayadashmi has been on a winning spree ever since its release. It recently overtook Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava after becoming the highest-grosser of 2025. Earning Rs 414 crore in just six days, it surpassed the lifetime collection of its own predecessor – the original Kantara that was released in 2022, according to Sacnilk.
Other records Kantara Chapter 1 has broken
The film achieved the third-biggest opening day of 2025, with Rs 61.85 crore on its first day, leaving behind major releases of 2025 like Chhaava and Saiyaara. The film became the 37th biggest hit of Hindi Cinema recently, beating Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone’s Fighter.
Crossing Rs 100 crore mark in just two days of its release, it became the highest-grossing film in the world in its opening week, outperforming major Hollywood releases.
The film is the fourth Indian movie ever to gross over Rs 50 crore each in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, and Kerala, joining the elite league of Baahubali 2, KGF: Chapter 2, and Jailer.
