Two of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters, Rajinikanth’s Coolie and War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, opened in theatres across the country today, just before the Independence Day holiday. Industry watchers and analysts predict a record-breaking run at the box office, thanks to the extended festive weekend. But in the Coolie vs War 2 clash, who’s ahead on Day One? We find out.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie marks a milestone in Rajinikanth’s career. It is his 50th year in cinema. The movie stars Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, and Soubin Shahir. Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala noted the strategic advantage of having such an impressive star cast. “Rajinikanth’s pan-India appeal, coupled with Aamir Khan’s strong hold in the Hindi belt, makes this a nationwide event. With five major stars, each bringing their own loyal fan base, the film could pull in massive crowds,” he said.

Meanwhile, War 2, part of the YRF Spy Universe, has already been receiving rave reviews online. One viewer wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “2nd half: good back story, but story falls flat & predictable. Lacks emotional connect. Both actors nailed their respective performances. @tarak9999 acting & looks will shut every hater🔥 Result & BO depends on Coolie now. #War2Review #War2 #YRFSpyUniverse.”

Even with a direct face-off against War 2, Rajinikanth’s multi-starrer has recorded remarkable advance bookings, surpassing Rs 100 crore for its opening weekend and selling more than 12 lakh tickets on day one. The advance bookings recorded a huge jump after Telugu showtimes were announced.

Data from Sacnilk shows that before reservations opened in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, War 2 had already secured approximately Rs 10 crore gross, including block seats for the Hindi version’s debut day. Once bookings went live in the Telugu markets, more than six lakh tickets were sold.

The high-octane War 2, sequel to the 2019 hit War, brings Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR together on screen for the first time. Hrithik, who first shared the screen with Rajinikanth at the start of his career, posted a warm tribute to the veteran star on social media.

“Took my first steps as an actor at your side. You were one of my first teachers, @rajinikanth sir, and continue to be an inspiration and a standard. Congratulations on completing 50 years of on-screen magic!” he wrote.
