Google layAlphabet’s Google has laid off several hundred employees from its platforms and devices division, which includes teams working on Android software, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser, according to a report by The Information citing a source familiar with the matter. The layoffs reportedly took place on Thursday.
These layoffs come months after Google offered voluntary buyouts to employees in the same unit in January 2025, as part of its internal restructuring efforts. A Google spokesperson confirmed the move, stating, “Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively. This included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January.”
Google has not issued an official public statement regarding the latest cuts, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The tech giant had previously reduced its workforce in other areas, including its cloud division in February, although those cuts affected only a few teams. This latest wave of layoffs adds to the broader trend of restructuring across Google’s core product lines.
Notably, in January 2023, Google announced plans to eliminate 12,000 jobs, accounting for 6% of its global workforce. These new job cuts appear to be part of its continued efforts to streamline operations and reallocate resources more efficiently across product teams.
