The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Summer Internship Programme offers students a valuable chance to experience the inner workings of India’s central bank and engage directly with economic, financial, regulatory, and policy-focused research. The programme is open to students in postgraduate courses, integrated five-year programmes, and professional bachelor’s degrees in fields such as Economics, Finance, Management, Statistics, Commerce, Banking, Econometrics, Law, and related areas. Only students in their penultimate year are eligible to apply, and their academic qualifications must come from recognised Indian institutions.
The internship usually runs for up to three months between April and July of the year following the application cycle, though the duration may vary depending on project needs. Applications for this year’s cycle opened on October 15 and will close on December 15. Shortlisting and interviews are scheduled for January and February, with final selections expected between February and March.
What is the application process?
Candidates must submit their applications online through the official RBI internship portal.
The form requires personal and academic information, a statement of purpose, preferred departments, and uploads of essential documents such as a photograph, signature, ID proof, and a bonafide or authorisation certificate from their institution. Applicants may apply for only one Control Office, usually linked to the state where their institution is based.
Selection process
Each year, RBI selects up to 125 interns through a competitive evaluation that includes application screening and interviews. Selected students are placed across various RBI offices in India, where they work on ongoing projects, research assignments, data analysis, documentation, and departmental tasks under expert guidance.
Their roles may involve exposure to areas like banking regulation, monetary policy, financial stability, compliance, economic analysis, and data-driven studies.
Stipend and other benefits
Interns receive a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000. While accommodation is not provided, outstation candidates may be reimbursed for AC II-Tier return rail travel to their internship location.
Since interns may handle confidential material during their work, they are required to sign a declaration of secrecy before beginning their assignment.
