The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday issued a notification stating that a minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory for Class 10 and 12 students to be eligible for the future board examinations.

Is there any provision for exemption?

CBSE further stated that it is willing to extend a haircut of 25% to students in case of medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, and other serious reasons. However, students wishing to avail this offer would be required to submit proper documentation corroborating their reason to the school authorities.

In case of medical emergencies, students would be required to file a leave application along with valid medical documentation immediately after availing the leave. For other reasons, like participation in national or international tournaments, students must inform the school of their absence in advance with a valid reason and in writing.

Under special circumstances, such as extended illness, a death in the family, or involvement in official national or international events. Eligibility will be determined by attendance records as of January 1, 2026. Any attendance updates made after this date will not be considered by the board

Guidelines for schools

Schools are further instructed to regularly monitor attendance and notify parents in writing if a student is frequently absent from class. CBSE will conduct surprise inspections to verify student attendance records. Schools with incomplete records may face strict action, including disaffiliation.

The notification further mandated that all affiliated to report instances of low attendance supported by official participation records, medical certifications, or death certificates to CBSE by January 7. Any submission posted after the mentioned date will not be accepted by the education board.
