University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the forthcoming revision of the curriculum for the National Eligibility Test (NET), a mandatory examination for individuals aspiring to pursue teaching positions in higher educational institutions. The UGC will establish an expert committee to carry out this revision. Candidates will receive ample notice before the implementation of the new syllabus in UGC-NET, ensuring a seamless transition, according to an official statement.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), acting on behalf of the UGC, administers the UGC-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and as an eligibility assessment for those seeking appointment as Assistant Professors in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, Indian and select foreign languages, as well as certain science subjects, the statement mentioned.

Conducted biannually in 83 subjects, typically in June and December, the UGC-NET examination saw its syllabi last updated in 2017. With the launch of the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020 and subsequent advancements in higher education promoting multidisciplinary curricula and holistic learning, the UGC, during its November 3, 2023 meeting, decided to embark on the task of updating the UGC-NET subject syllabi.

Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman, UGC emphasised that the commission would establish an expert committee to undertake this exercise, ensuring that candidates have sufficient time to adapt to the new syllabus before its integration into the UGC-NET, as per the statement.
