Schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Karaikal, and Puducherry, have been ordered to shut due to the heavy rain forecast triggered by Cyclone Fengal over the Bay of Bengal.

The Puducherry government announced closures for November 29 and 30, affecting both government and privately managed institutions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Puducherry, and Karaikal. According to the IMD, the deep depression is likely to make landfall as a depression on November 30 between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Heavy rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu over the next 2-3 days, with intense downpours anticipated in the Delta districts, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram in the next 24 hours. On Friday, extremely heavy rain may affect parts of Villupuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Chengalpattu, and surrounding Delta regions.

Cyclone Fengal is expected to intensify over the next 48 hours, posing a significant threat to coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. The storm is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding, prompting authorities to issue warnings for residents in low-lying and coastal regions.

Officials have urged people to stay vigilant and adhere to safety measures to reduce risks. Emergency teams are on standby, and evacuation plans are being prepared as a precautionary step against the cyclone’s impact.
