In 2023, more than 23 billion lessons were completed and nearly one and a half billion hours were spent learning on Duolingo. More than 32 million people worldwide studied more than one language this year. This year’s data shows how learner motivation and interest have impacted the top ten most popular languages. Key findings reveal, according to the Global Language Report by Duolingo. 

The report explores the most popular languages studied on Duolingo and highlights key language learning trends, reflecting insights derived from the platform’s 83 million monthly learners worldwide.

  • Korean continues to grow in global popularity: The Korean course jumped to 6th in global rankings. Around the world, young people are driving a growing interest in all Asian languages, especially Korean. Korean ranks among the top 10 languages studied in some of the biggest countries around the world, including India, where it has grown 75% year-over-year.
  • English still tops the charts: English remains the most popular language to study around the world. It is the one language to study in 122 countries, which is three more than last year. 49% of global learners say they are motivated to study English for education or work purposes. In India, the significance of English in education is particularly notable, with 40% of English learners on Duolingo citing education as their primary motivation for language study. Additionally, among the largest markets of the company, English learners in India complete the most lessons daily, underscoring the language’s widespread importance in the country’s educational landscape.
  • Hindi’s surging growth and global appeal: Hindi has made significant strides in language learning on Duolingo, jumping two spots from 10th in 2022 to 8th in 2023. Globally, over 8.4 million learners are actively studying Hindi on the app. In India, Hindi holds a prominent position as the second most popular language among Duolingo’s learners, following English.

As Indians explore diverse countries and cultures more than ever, in line with the global Language Report, Duolingo partnered with YouGov to reveal intriguing language learning trends associated with travel in India. This collaboration revealed that 61% of Indians are primarily motivated to travel for relaxation, to explore new cultures and to seek adventure and thrill, the report explained. 

Additionally, 53% of Indians emphasise the importance of language when ordering at establishments (restaurants, cafes, etc.) or seeking and understanding directions while visiting foreign places. Notably, an impressive 61% of Indians make an effort to learn basic phrases in the local language of the places they visit during their travels, highlighting the significant role of linguistic proficiency in shaping an enriched travel experience

On the cusp of 2024, the survey also unveiled a notable shift in Indian New Year’s resolutions: Language learning is increasingly becoming a priority, with 64% of Indians resolving to prioritise it. Among these language-learning resolutions, 55% aim for personal growth, self-improvement or career advancement, while 75% of Indians expressed their commitment to regularly practise their language skills in the new year.
