Dhiman Chakma (36), an IAS officer has been caught red handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a businessman in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

The Odisha Vigilance Directorate said that Chakma was posted as a sub-collector in Kalahandi district’s Dharamgarh. The officials revealed that he allegedly took Rs 10 lakh as the first instalment of a total Rs 20 lakh bribe that he had demanded from a local businessman.

The businessman claimed he was threatened with official action if he refused to pay the amount. Feeling pressured and fearing consequences, the businessman decided to approach the Vigilance Directorate and filed a formal complaint against Chakma.

Based on the complaint, an investigation was launched. Authorities are now looking into the matter to gather further evidence and determine the full extent of the alleged corruption. Further action will follow as the probe continues.

Who is IAS officer Dhiman Chakma?

Chakma is from 2021 batch of officers and hails from Kanchanpur in Tripura. He studied computer science at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Agartala, as per multiple media reports. After clearing the UPSC exam, he reportedly worked as an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, initially, before becoming an IAS officer.

According to a release by the department, a case has been filed against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the investigation is still continuing.
