BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s derogatory remarks against BSP leader Danish Ali while addressing the Lok Sabha during a debate on the Chandrayaan-3 mission on Friday have left the government on a sticky wicket. During the discussion, Bidhuri allegedly resorted to name-calling BSP MP Danish Ali, which created an uproar and drew criticism from opposition parties.

After Ramesh Bidhuri’s remarks, BSP MP Danish Ali sent a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office, calling for action against the derogatory remark. He said, “I have given notice. Everything is on record, and it’s happening for the first time that this type of language has been used for an elected MP.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also issued a warning against the BJP MP on Friday over his objectionable remark, according to officials.

The remarks triggered a flurry of reactions from Opposition leaders cutting across party lines. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take action against him, stating that the Speaker could “feel free” to initiate a privilege motion against her for “calling him out,” alleging that “abusing Muslims and OBCs was an integral part of the BJP’s culture.”

“But I am asking you here and now—what action are you taking against Ramesh Bidhuri?” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Congress leader Pawan Khera wrote on Twitter that the remarks reflected the emergence of a “New India” under the rule of PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. “I have seen Ramesh Bidhuri as an MLA in the Delhi Assembly. He was better during those days. I guess, in Parliament, his upbringing has been ably done by Modi-Shah. New Parliament. New India.” .

National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah slammed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for not taking strict action against the derogatory statement made in the Lok Sabha. “Shame on the Speaker for refusing to take any action against the abusive BJP MP. Opposition MPs have been suspended for trivial offences, and here, outright abuse is condoned.”

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also called the BJP and referred to it as a “party full of scoundrels” in a video posted on X on the official handle of the Aam Aadmi Party. He said, “We say again and again that the BJP is a party of scoundrels. The language used by BJP MP RAMESH BIDHURI is the language of a mafia goon.”

Earlier today, Lalu Prasad Yadav blamed the Prime Minister for the remarks by the BJP MP, stating, “The Prime Minister has given rise to a depraved (vikrit) social and political culture in which one of his MPs glorifies the terrorist who assassinated the Father of the Nation, Gandhi ji,” he wrote without taking any names.

The allusion was apparently to Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur, who had called Nathu Ram Godse a ‘patriot,’ only to retract later under mounting public criticism.
