Torrential rain, extreme waterlogging and thunderstorms have engulfed parts of northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Delhi and an orange alert across parts of Maharashtra and Jammu. With Mumbai rains causing heavy waterlogging in the metro city, heavy showers in Delhi brought traffic to a halt. Residents face major disruption in daily life as prolonged rains are predicted.
Warnings of heavy rainfall have been sounded in Mumbai, Pune, Sindhudurg, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. Due to the heavy rains in the city, Mumbai Traffic Police also announced the closure of the Andheri subway, triggered by waterlogging.
Mumbai Rains: IMD orange alert
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall till July 26 in Maharashtra with Thane Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri under high alert. Residents have complained about waterlogging triggered delays on the Central and Harbour line trains.
Red alert in Delhi weather forecast
A red alert has been issued in Delhi as the IMD predicts a 100% chance of rainfall. As heavy rains poured in the capital city earlier today, traffic snarled, causing traffic jams among heavy vehicles.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Safdarjung, the primary weather station of the national capital, recorded 5.6 mm of rainfall between 5.30 am and 8.30 am, while other stations reported higher amounts — Pragati Maidan recorded 16.6 mm, Pusa 10 mm, Janakpuri 9.5 mm, and Najafgarh 2 mm. Waterlogging and traffic disruptions affected several parts of Delhi, including South Delhi, South East Delhi, North Delhi, ITO, South Extension, NH-8, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Nehru Place, East of Kailash, Colony Road, and several other areas
In its latest weather bulletin, the IMD predicted, “Skies will be mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain and chances of lightning and thunderstorms on July 22 and July 23.”
Over the upcoming week, temperatures are expected to vary from a low of 23 degrees Celsius and a high of around 36 degrees Celsius, as per the weather department’s seven-day prediction. Waterlogging has been reported in many residential and commercial areas, as fallen trees prove hazardous to commuters. NCR regions like Noida and Gurugram, too, received heavy rainfall.
