The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a wet spell is likely to occur over the Himalayan region for the coming week and on the plains of Northwest India from January 4 to January 5, 2025. Dense fog and cold wave conditions are expected to maintain their grip over some parts of Northwest India for the next 24 hours, gradual improvement is forecast afterward.

Western Disturbance to bring snowfall and rainfall

The Met Department has also warned that a fresh western disturbance may affect Northwest India from January 5. Under its influence, light to isolated scattered rains are likely to be experienced over the Western Himalayan region from January 1 to January 3. They are expected to become widespread from January 4 to January 6. Light-isolated to scattered showers may occur across the plains of Northwest India from January 4 to 6. Heavy downpours along with snowfall are expected to happen in Jammu-Kashmir, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, and Baltistan on January 5.

Cold wave & dense fog predictions

Cold day conditions will prevail in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh from January 1.  The cold wave conditions have led to maximum temperatures dipping by more than 5 degrees Celsius in at least 50 districts of Uttar Pradesh, as per IMD.

Dense fog is projected to engulf parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Haryana, and other eastern and northeastern states till January 5.

Delhi/NCR Weather Update

The Met Department has predicted a mainly clear sky in the Delhi/NCR regions on Wednesday. Surface winds are anticipated to blow from the northwest direction at a speed of less than 8 kilometers per hour. Smog and mild fog are likely to be present in most areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures may be 17 and 8 degrees respectively.

Ground Frost Alert

As per the Weather Department, ground frost conditions are forecast in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on January 1.
