UP SIR Electoral Draft Roll: The Election Commission of India released the draft voter list for Uttar Pradesh today. The list was earlier expected to be published on December 31. Following the SIR process, Uttar Pradesh now has 125.5 million registered voters, with 28.9 million names removed during the revision exercise.
After the draft voter list has been published, voters whose names are missing can file objections, apply for inclusion, and get their names added to the final voter list within the stipulated period.
Why was UP SIR draft roll release delayed?
The delay came after Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer asked for extra time so officials at the district level could double-check voters marked as dead, shifted to another place, or not traceable. The Special Intensive Revision exercise has already been completed in states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

UP SIR draft roll live: Why is SIR being conducted now?
The Election Commission says the regular annual updates are no longer enough to correct long-standing problems in voter data. It points out that India has not carried out a full door-to-door voter verification across the country since 2002–2004. Over the years, this has led to several issues in electoral rolls, including:
- Names of people who have died or moved away but were never removed
- The same person being registered in more than one place
- Voter numbers growing faster than population estimates
With important state elections scheduled for 2026, the Commission says it wants voter lists that are accurate, clear, and strong enough to stand up to legal scrutiny, without any inflated figures.
UP SIR draft roll live: What exactly is SIR?
SIR, or Special Intensive Revision, is a detailed check of voter lists carried out by the Election Commission when the usual yearly update is not considered enough. The process includes door-to-door visits, pre-filled forms, online applications, and a fresh review of existing voter records.
The Election Commission has the authority to do this under the Constitution. Article 324 gives it full powers to oversee and update voter rolls. The Representation of the People Act, 1950, also allows the Commission to order an intensive revision if it believes there are errors in the current lists.
UP SIR draft roll live: The questions around SIR
As the Election Commission of India carries out its Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, in several states, the term has been widely discussed across the country. Along with the attention has come a lot of confusion and questions from voters. The process first started in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections and has since been extended to 13 states and Union Territories. For many people, one basic question stands out: what exactly is SIR, and why are voters being asked to submit a new form now?
UP SIR draft roll live: What time is Uttar Pradesh releasing electoral draft rolls?
After postponing the release of the electoral draft rolls three times in Uttar Pradesh, the EC will finally publish them today. Although the timing of the release is not confirmed, they are expected to release the draft roll by noon today.
