The founder and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, actor-turned-politician Vijay has been announced by the party as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls. The state elections are expected to take place in April/May 2026.

According to ANI, Vijay said at the meeting, “No direct or indirect alliance with ideological enemy and separatists. BJP divides people based on religion and encourages division among people to enjoy political gain. Their such poisonous attempts could work anywhere but never in Tamil Nadu.”

A special resolution was adopted in the party’s executive committee meeting in this regard on Friday. The TVK state executive committee also strongly criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks on the English language, calling them “malicious” and a direct attack on Tamil Nadu’s two-language policy. The party reiterated its firm opposition to any attempt to impose Hindi or Sanskrit in the state.

The committee also condemned the Election Commission of India’s decision to initiate an electoral revision exercise in Tamil Nadu, alleging that it is a politically motivated move aimed at reducing minority votes and boosting support for the BJP. “This is a clear subversion of democratic principles,” the party stated.

In preparation for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the committee also discussed various aspects of TVK chief Vijay’s outreach campaign.

Vijay on Thursday met with the family of Ajith Kumar, who allegedly died while in police custody in Sivaganga district. He demanded a High Court-monitored probe into the incident and held Chief Minister MK Stalin, who also serves as the Home Minister, accountable for the custodial death.

“In the Tiruppuvanam Ajithkumar custodial death case, a special investigation team must be formed under the direct supervision of the High Court to conduct an inquiry and deliver a swift judgment!” the TVK chief wrote in a post on X.He claimed that the police department, under the “direct supervision of MK Stalin”, acts in a “cruel, utterly inhumane and unjust manner towards ordinary citizens.” Vijay also alleged that the state government initially shielded the accused and only took action after the High Court intervened.
