A new low-pressure area developing over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Sri Lanka coastline, is expected to bring a fresh spell of intense showers to Tamil Nadu over the next two days. As per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department, the weather system, which formed early today, is likely to bring significant moisture from the sea. This will lead to widespread rain, thunderstorms and occasionally heavy downpours across several districts.

The Met Department has warned that heavy to heavy rainfall is predicted at isolated locations in Tamil Nadu on November 16 and 17. The influence of the developing system will be most strongly experienced over the next 48 hours.

Rainfall forecast across Tamil Nadu

In its latest regional bulletin for the state, IMD stated that light to moderate rains along with thunder and lightning are expected today over Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Puducherry, Karaikal, Thanjavur and Villupuram. These districts may see repeated spells of rain throughout the day.

The Met Department also informed that thunderstorms may continue to take place across Tamil Nadu from November 15 to 19. Localised lightning activity may get intense at times.

Rainfall to extend to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema

The developing low-pressure system is also predicted to impact neighbouring states. IMD has also cautioned that light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Kerala and Mahe for the next several days.

Meanwhile, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema could experience severe rainfall from November 17, followed by thunderstorm activity from November 16 to November 19.

IMD has indicated that Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe will continue to receive light to moderate showers or thunderstorms at many places for the above-mentioned period. The department further observed that thunderstorm activity, along with lightning, is likely to take place across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions throughout the week. Gusty winds are expected to reach 30-35 kmph over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands between November 16 to November 19.
