A speeding Mercedes car rammed into three pedestrians in the early hours of Sunday, killing one person and leaving the others seriously injured. The incident took place near Vasant Kunj in South Delhi around 2:00 am and prompted an immediate response from the Vasant Kunj North police station. Officials have since detained the driver and launched an investigation.

The victims had been standing at an autorickshaw stand near Ambience Mall when the G63 vehicle struck. Family members told ANI that the deceased, identified as 23-year-old Rohit was returning from home after working at the mall when tragedy struck. All three men had worked at a restaurant inside the mall.

Officials found the victims lying on the side of the road following the crash and rushed them to a hospital. Rohit, a resident of Chamoli in Uttarakhand, was declared dead upon arrival. His colleagues are presently receiving treatment.

SUV lost control due to the road diversion

The Delhi Police said that the Mercedes “lost balance due to a diversion,” which caused it to first hit a pole and then crash into the three men who were standing at the auto stand, as quoted by ANI. The vehicle “struck a pole” before hitting them. The crash site showed heavy damage, with the front of the SUV badly damaged and debris scattered across the road.

Officials stated the men were waiting at an auto stand after completing their shift in the mall. A relative of the deceased alleged that the driver seemed to be drunk, although police said medical reports are still awaited.

As per the IANS report, the impact was so strong that all three victims were thrown onto the road, leaving one fatally injured on the spot.

Driver detained, vehicle belonged to a friend

The driver has been identified as Shivam, 29, a resident of Karol Bagh. As per the police, he was driving the car, with his wife and elder brother inside the SUV at the time of the crash. They were reportedly returning from a wedding.

The vehicle is registered to Abhishek, a friend of Shivam, the police added. Legal procedures have been initiated, and further details will be shared as the probe progresses.

This accident comes weeks after another Mercedes-related collision in the national capital, where two bike riders in Rajouri Garden suffered fractures after being hit by a luxury car in October.
