The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The hearing will be on Tuesday.

According to the cause list of August 20 uploaded on the top court website, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is scheduled to hear on Tuesday a matter titled ‘In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and related issue’.

The body of the doctor was discovered in a seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. A civic volunteer was arrested the following day on suspicion of involvement in the crime.

The Calcutta High Court recently transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which began the probe on August 14.

Meanwhile, healthcare services across West Bengal were disrupted for the tenth straight day on Sunday as junior doctors at state-run hospitals continued their strike, demanding justice for the deceased doctor.

With outpatient departments (OPDs) at government hospitals closed on Sundays, the patient volume was lower. Senior doctors remained on duty in emergency departments to care for those who came in.

Medical students from various colleges in Kolkata staged a demonstration today. Carrying posters and placards, the students marched through heavy rains and ankle-deep water from College Street to Shyambazar.

They chanted slogans calling for severe punishment for the accused and urged the CBI to expedite its investigation, which was transferred from local police by the Calcutta High Court.
