Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday (December 12) informed that the leading cause of road accidents in India is lane indiscipline. He shared that even his own vehicle had been fined twice in Mumbai for violating traffic rules.
While acknowledging that high speed is a concern, Gadkari emphasised that lane indiscipline is a far greater issue in India, pointing out that speeding is not as significant a problem globally.
Speaking during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari urged the need for educating the public, especially the youth, on traffic discipline, and stressed that even children should be taught the importance of following traffic rules. He also mentioned the installation of CCTV cameras along roads to monitor and deter traffic violations.
The minister further appealed to lawmakers to organise awareness programs in their respective constituencies to promote road safety.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla echoed Gadkari’s sentiments, underscoring the responsibility of members to help educate the public about traffic laws in order to reduce road accidents.
