The Telugu film industry and fans were shocked by a tragic stampede during the screening of the much-anticipated film Pushpa-2 on December 4, resulting in the death of a woman. Actor Allu Arjun, who was present at the event, has come under scrutiny for allegedly refusing to leave the theatre despite being informed of the incident.
During a press conference summarising the year’s events, City Police Commissioner CV Anand presented a video documenting the sequence of events leading to the stampede. Compiled from news footage and cell phone recordings, the video suggests that Allu Arjun stayed inside the theatre until midnight, despite the chaos outside.
According to a police official, attempts to inform the actor about the stampede were obstructed by his staff. When the official finally communicated with Allu Arjun, the actor allegedly refused to leave, citing his desire to watch the film.
Police eventually escorted Allu Arjun out of the theatre after the situation became increasingly dire.
There have been allegations that bouncers hired by Allu Arjun misbehaved with the crowd and even police officers during the stampede. Commissioner Anand warned that VIPs would be held accountable for the actions of their hired personnel, and strict legal action would follow if misconduct is confirmed.
Reactions from Officials and Ministers
The incident has sparked a political debate. State Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy criticised Allu Arjun for his response to the incident, demanding an apology to the government and the Chief Minister.
“This government is never vindictive. We supported the film industry by allowing benefit shows and hiking ticket prices. The actor should show respect to the government and the Chief Minister,” said Venkat Reddy.
Conversely, Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of using the incident to malign Allu Arjun’s reputation. Kumar claimed the CM’s comments amounted to character assassination and harmed the Telugu film industry.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar also visited the family of the woman who died in the stampede. Offering condolences, he assured support for the family and prayed for the recovery of a boy injured in the incident.
State DGP Jitender emphasised the importance of public safety, urging film personalities and event organisers to prioritize the well-being of citizens during such gatherings. He stated, “The safety and security of citizens must always come first, and everyone, including celebrities, must act responsibly.”
The police have declined to comment on whether they will appeal against the interim bail granted to Allu Arjun. The course of action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation. Allegations that the actor’s team threatened the victim’s family to remain silent also remain under review.
The tragic stampede at the Pushpa-2 screening has sparked debates over accountability, public safety, and the responsibilities of film celebrities. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and taking measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
