Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister attended a special lunch hosted by President Gokhool and paid tribute to the Former Prime Minister of Mauritius, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, and the former President Anerood Jugnauth, at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses.
The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, announced on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be honored with the highest distinction of Mauritius, The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. With this recognition, PM Modi becomes the first Indian to receive this prestigious award. This marks the 21st international accolade bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi by a foreign nation.
PM Gifts: Holy Sangam water, Banarsi saree and much more
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool, with holy Sangam water from the Mahakumbh, encased in an intricately designed brass and copper pot. The gift of Sangam water, stored in the brass and copper vessel, is a nod to traditional Hindu beliefs that these materials help preserve the purity and spiritual essence of the sacred water.
The President of Mauritius was presented with Makhana, a nutritious superfood from Bihar, in a meaningful gesture. This gift coincided with the recent announcement by the Government of India in the 2025 Budget, establishing a dedicated Makhana Board in Bihar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the First Lady of Mauritius, Brinda Gokhool, with a Banarasi saree housed in a Sadeli box. The Banarasi saree, renowned for its luxurious silk, intricate brocade, and exquisite zari work, originates from Varanasi and represents cultural heritage. The royal blue saree is embellished with silver zari motifs, a wide zari border, and a beautifully detailed pallu, making it perfect for weddings and grand celebrations.
OCI Card to the President and the First Lady
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his honor at attending Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as Chief Guest for the second time. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted a special gesture during the visit, where the Prime Minister presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to both the President and the First Lady of Mauritius.
In a post shared on X, PM Modi wrote, “Had a great meeting with His Excellency Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, President of Mauritius. He is well-acquainted with India and Indian culture. I expressed my gratitude for inviting me to be a part of the National Day celebrations. We discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors.”
