Pakistan on Wednesday returned Border Security Force (BSF) constable Purnam Kumar Shaw to India through the Attari-Wagah border crossing in Punjab, as confirmed by the officials. According to the PTI report, the handover happened at 10:30 am, BSF personnel received Shaw from their counterparts. As per BSF officials, the exchange was carried out peacefully, and all the standard procedures were followed.

On April 23, Shawa was arrested by the Pakistani forces near the India-Pakistan international border in Ferozepur district, just a day after the terror attack that happened in Pahalgam.

Joy at the BSF constable’s home in West Bengal

The home of BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw on Wednesday was filled with relief and joy after his return from Pakistani custody. Shaw, who hails from Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, was handed over to Indian authorities by Pakistan Rangers at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab.

His unexpected return has brought an end to a tense situation for his family, which they were experiencing for last two weeks.

“We are extremely relieved. These past days were filled with anxiety. We thank the central government and BSF officials for ensuring his safe return,” a family member stated while speaking to the media. “We’ve been longing to hear from him, and now we just want to see him home.”

BSF constable to undergo medical checkup

Officials informed PTI that BSF constable Shaw will need to undergo a detailed medical examination. Next, he will need to attend a counselling and debriefing session where officers will question him with crucial questions related to his 21-day custody in Pakistan.

He won’t be immediately asked to resume his service at the 24th Battalion of the Border Security Force. An internal probe will also be conducted on Shaw by the Punjab Frontier of the BSF to identify any operational shortcomings and the analyse the circumstances of his capture.
