The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, also known as the “one nation, one election” bill, is set to be introduced in the Lower House of Parliament on Tuesday. The Bill, which seeks to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Following its introduction, Meghwal will request that the bill be referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further discussions.

The committee, which will be made up of members from both houses, will be formed based on the proportionate strength of each party. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the largest party, is expected to hold the committee’s chairmanship.

Meghwal will also introduce the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at aligning election schedules for the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Last week, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal for simultaneous elections but left the issue of local body elections undecided. The Cabinet also greenlit two bills to enable the concurrent conduct of parliamentary and state elections.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena, a BJP ally led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has issued a whip to its Lok Sabha members to be present in the House on Tuesday. The party’s chief whip, Shrirang Barne, said that crucial legislative business will be discussed.

The Congress has also issued a three-line whip to its Lok Sabha MPs, directing them to attend the session for what it termed “crucial proceedings.”
