BJP’s tribal leader and four-time MLA Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday (June 12) was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha, marking the saffron party’s first clear mandate victory in the assembly elections and ending the 24-year rule of the BJD. This decision was made at a BJP legislature party meeting in Bhubaneswar, a week after the party won the state elections, leading to the formation of the BJP’s first government in Odisha. Majhi, a prominent tribal leader, succeeds senior state leaders Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram, who joined the Union government. Majhi’s deputies, KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, also took oath today.
With 78 seats secured in the 147-member Odisha Assembly, the BJP emerged victorious, while the BJD secured 51 seats. Previously, the BJD and the BJP were in alliance for 11 years between 1998 and 2009, contesting three Lok Sabha and two Assembly elections together. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Majhi government on Wednesday at Janata Maidan.
