Northeast is reeling under the chaos of extremely heavy flooding due to consistent rainfall. There have been non-stop landslides which have damaged nearly 3000 houses, according to a report by the Indian Express.

IMD issues Red Alert for Assam, Meghalaya

It looks like the skies over Northeast are not clearing anytime soon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days. Similar warnings have been sent out for Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, all set to face intense downpours.

Other states like Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand are also likely to see heavy rainfall in some areas.

In Sikkim, the rains have already led to serious damage. For example, the Mangan district has been hit hard, with hundreds of tourists stranded after two bridges were partially damaged. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has for now managed to restore access to Lachung.

Rising Teesta River eroding land dangerously close to Phidang suspension bridge

The situation in Lachen is worse. Two key bailey bridges on the Lachen axis — at Minsithang and Zeema — have been swept away, cutting the town off completely. Adding to the worry, the rising Teesta River is eroding land dangerously close to the Phidang suspension bridge, putting its towers at risk.

In Manipur, the Imphal River has overflowed in the Checkon area, flooding government buildings, hospitals, and even the All India Radio Imphal station. Water has also reached the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, according to reports from PTI.

With more rain on the way, officials across the region are on high alert.
