The current Director of the CBI Praveen Sood is expected to receive a one-year extension after a high-level selection panel failed to reach consensus on his successor, sources told The Indian Express. The meeting, chaired by PM Narendra Modi and attended by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, was held at the PM’s official residence on Sunday evening.

The three-member committee deliberated over the names of several senior IPS officers but could not agree on a candidate. With Sood’s two-year fixed tenure ending on May 25, the panel reportedly decided to retain him for an additional year to ensure continuity in leadership.

The final decision is likely to be formalised through a gazette notification in the coming days.

Under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, the CBI Director is appointed for a fixed term of two years based on the recommendation of a committee comprising the PM, the CJI and the Leader of Opposition. The process aims to maintain the agency’s independence and protect it from political interference. The meeting lasted for about 45 minutes, beginning at 6:45 pm and concluding by 7:30 pm.
