Bihar is gearing up for an intense assembly election later this year, and political parties are trying to woo voters with just a few weeks left for the polls. In a move to continue to hold the women voters, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Sunday launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana. The scheme is aimed at providing employment opportunities for women.

CM Nitish also flagged off several publicity vans to popularise the scheme and also launched the portal for the same. The CM was accompanied by the Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha.

What is the scheme?

The Chief Minister said under this scheme, one woman from every family in the state will be given financial assistance to start a business of her choice.

These women will be provided with Rs 10,000 as the first installment of financial support via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to start her chosen employment activity. The CM informed that after regular assessment, these women will be given Rs an additional Rs 2 lakh support for their business idea.

The Rural Development Department will be the nodal agency for this scheme and Bihar Rural Livelihood Promotion Society, Jeevika will execute it.

“I am confident that the implementation of this scheme will not only strengthen the position of women even further but also provide better employment opportunities within the state, and people will not have to leave the state for employment out of necessity,” the Chief Minister added.

Bihar elections 2025

Launching the scheme, the CM said that the online portal for the applications from women under the ‘Chief Minister Women Employment Scheme’ has been launched. Additionally, under the awareness program, 250 vehicles were flagged off by showing the green flag, he added.

As part of the scheme, local markets or haat bazaars will be developed across villages and towns for the sale of products made by women.

The assembly elections in the state are due in late October-early November and a fierce contest between the opposition’s alliance and ruling NDA bloc is highly anticipated. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) being done by the Election Commission of India (ECI) is another flashpoint that both sides have been trying to make people aware about. However, while NDA calls it a progressive step, the opposition maintains the exercise is an attempt to reduce the number of genuine voters in Bihar.
