In a breakthrough in the murder case of a 20-year-old woman, police on Tuesday arrested the main accused, Dawood Shaikh, from Gulbarga district in Karnataka, according to PTI reports.

The murder took place on late Friday night, in Navi Mumbai’s Uran, where the victim identified as Yashashree Shinde’s body was found in the bushes near the railway station. According to officials she was murdered by a rejected lover, who remained at large until now.

“Our initial investigation suggests the woman was murdered after a love affair went wrong. The girl’s boyfriend had also gone missing with the girl and is yet to be found. He is the primary suspect. A case of murder has been registered and five police teams have been formed to trace him,” an official had said.

Notably, the victim’s body bore multiple injury marks and stab wounds, indicating that she was murdered very brutally. Shinde was a resident of Uran and used to work in Belapur, about 25 km away.

According to The Indian Express, early Saturday morning, police received a call about a woman’s body found near the railway station. Officers who arrived at the scene transported the remains to a hospital, where Shinde’s family confirmed her identity. A murder case was subsequently registered.

Shinde’s father, Surendra Kumar, told the media that Dawood Shaikh was responsible for her death. Authorities believe the murder may stem from an unrequited love affair.

A senior police officer reported that Shinde’s body had multiple stab wounds on her stomach and back, but it had not been dismembered. The officer added that if medical examinations indicate sexual assault before the murder, additional charges will be filed, according to The Indian Express.

Earlier, Navi Mumbai police took Mohsin, a man from Karnataka, into custody. Authorities obtained phone records showing he was in constant contact with Yashashree Shinde.
