Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “destroying” the dignity of his office by repeatedly making “hollow promises” to 140 crore Indians.

In a scathing attack, she urged Modi to focus on “restoring the dignity of his post by resorting to truth” rather than worrying about the Congress party.

Her remarks followed Modi’s statement on Friday, where he claimed that the Congress party stands “badly exposed” for making promises it cannot deliver. The Prime Minister’s comments came in response to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s assertion that the party’s state units should ensure their promises are properly budgeted.

Modi also criticised the developmental trajectory and fiscal health of Congress-ruled states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, describing them as deteriorating.

In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi invoked the principles of truth emphasised by Mahatma Gandhi and the national motto “Satyameva Jayate,” stating,” In a country where truth is the basis of thousands of years of culture, the person sitting on the highest post should not resort to falsehood.”

The allegations levelled by the prime minister against the Congress are far from the truth, she said.

“The Congress started fulfilling the promises made to the people as soon as it formed the government, without waiting for the next elections. Be it Karnataka, Telangana or Himachal Pradesh, people’s money is being put into their pockets everyday through guarantees,” the Congress general secretary said in the post.

The prime minister has understood that his words no longer have any value before the country’s people, she claimed.

She further claimed that the Prime Minister’s words now hold no value for the public, stating, , “The ‘100 days plan’, ‘taking opinion of 20 lakh people for the roadmap for 2047’, ‘2 crore jobs every year’, ‘100 smart cities’, ‘bringing back black money’, ‘reducing inflation and unemployment’, ‘doubling farmers’ income’, ‘bringing rupee at par with dollar’ and ‘bringing ‘Achche Din’ — these are all promises which have been proven false and now the people of the country have no faith in them.”

“The Prime Minister has destroyed the dignity of the highest and most respected post of the country by repeatedly making empty promises to 140 crore Indians. Instead of worrying about the Congress, he should work on restoring the dignity of his post by resorting to truth,” she added in her post.

Additionally, Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera slammed PM Modi for undermining the dignity of his position with false promises. He claimed that Congress governments have fulfilled their commitments and alleged that Modi deleted a post attacking the party due to fear of being fact-checked.

On Friday, Congress launched a multi-pronged attack on Modi regarding his comments about the party’s poll guarantees. Kharge referred to the “Modi Ki Guarantee” as a “cruel joke” on the Indian populace, stating that the ‘B’ in BJP stands for ‘betrayal’ and ‘J’ for ‘jumla.’ He described Modi’s claims as characterized by “lies, deceit, fakery, loot, and publicity,” condemning the Prime Minister’s 100-day plan as a mere public relations stunt.

Various Congress leaders, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, echoed Priyanka Gandhi’s sentiments, emphasizing the party’s track record in delivering on its promises.
