Mumbai rain update: After 48 hours of torrential rain in Mumbai, the waterlogged roads have brought the city to its knees. On the third day 72 hours later, the rain gods showed mercy after a prolonged red alert warning from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). While Pune was on red alert, several regions of Mumbai received mild showers under an orange alert. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was forced to shut down educational institutions and government offices on August 18 and 19 as the city headed towards normal on August 20.

IMD’s prediction for today, issues red alerts in THESE areas

As per the latest forecast, the IMD has issued a red alert in Maharashtra for Pune and eased the warnings in Thane, and Raigad. For now, there is a yellow alert in Mumbai, with moderate spells of rain predicted in Nashik and Satara. The local train routes are back to normal after facing severe halts and delays yesterday, as tracks were submerged under water. A high tide is expected at 11:01 AM today, with it recurring at 10:57 PM.

Mumbai Rains: Will schools and colleges remain open?

There has been no official confirmation from the BMC, but residents are worried about the waist-deep water on the roads across Mumbai, in areas such as Thane, Hindmata, Worli, Andheri, among others. The official social media page also bashed the fake news that was circulating under BMC’s name, announcing the school closure on August 20.

However, as per reports, schools are closed in Lonavala, considering the high warning from the IMD. Moreover, Mumbai University rescheduled its exam to August 23, which was to be held originally on August 19.

However, for the safety of the residents, the municipal body has advised residents to leave their houses only if it is necessary. Given 10 reported deaths due to heavy rainfall, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took stock of the monorail accident near Mysore Colony in Chennai. He revealed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the MMRDA, the fire department, and the municipal bodies carried out rescue efforts. After three hours of relentless efforts, all passengers who were trapped were rescued safely. Additionally, a probe is set to be ordered into the cloudburst in Nanded, which claimed at least four lives earlier this week.

Are government offices closed in Mumbai?

With a orange alert sounded at the coast in Pune, the region is highly sensitive as heavy rains batter several parts of Maharashtra. Following the heavy downpours, the BMC has not extended the closure of government offices.

Mumbai rains: Airlines issue fresh travel advisory, check here

Air India, Akasa Air, and IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for Mumbai due to heavily waterlogged roads. There was a significant delay in the local train timings as the rain affected both the Harbour and Central lines as tracks were submerged underwater. However, normal functions resumed as water receded after 10 PM yesterday. Trains to and from Boisar, Diva, and Vasai still remain cancelled.
