Mizoram Elections 2023 Key Faces: The voting for 40 assembly seats of the Mizoram assembly elections took place on 7 November at 1276 polling stations in which more than 8.52 lakh voters exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 174 candidates.
The counting of votes will begin at 8:00 am on December 4. The ECI will officially release the results on their website. Here are the list of key candidates from Mizoram –
Zoramthanga, MNF
Mizo National Front (MNF) leader and Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, emerges as a key figure in this year’s assembly elections. He is contesting from the Aizawl East-I seat, facing competition from Congress candidate Lalsanglura Ralte and ZPM’s Lalthansanga, who serves as the party’s vice-president. In the 2018 elections, Zoramthanga secured victory with 42.9 per cent of the votes, defeating independent candidate K Sapdanga (30 per cent) and Congress’ K Vanlalrawna (24.5 per cent).
Lalsawta, Congress
Mizoram Congress Chief, Lalsawta, stands as a significant candidate in this year’s elections, contesting from Aizawl West-III. His opponents in this electoral battle include ZPM candidate VL Zaithanzama and MNF candidate K Sawmvela. Lalsawta, who served as the finance minister of Mizoram until 2018, secured victories in the state elections of 2008 and 2013 from Aizawl East-II. However, in 2018, he lost the seat to MNF’s Robert Romawia Royte, with MNF winning with 41.4 percent votes while Lalsawta secured 26.9 percent votes.
Lalduhoma, ZPM
Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) founder, Lalduhoma, emerges as a significant contender in the Mizoram assembly elections. He is contesting from the Serchhip constituency, facing competition from Congress’ R Vanlaltluanga and MNF’s debutant candidate J Malsawmzual Vanchhawng. In the 2018 elections, Lalduhoma secured victory from Aizawl West-1 but opted to represent Serchhip. A former IPS officer, Lalduhoma, was also part of the security detail for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Vanlalhmuaka, BJP
The President of the BJP state unit, Vanlalhmuaka, is set to contest from the Dampa constituency, a crucial seat for the saffron party as it was the only seat it secured in 2018. Vanlalhmuaka is competing against Mizo National Front’s (MNF) Lalrintluanga Sailo, Congress’ Lalhmingthanga Sailo, and ZPM’s Vanlalsailova in the elections.
Tawnluia, MNF and Mizoram deputy CM
Mizoram Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, who also serves as the MNF vice president, is set to contest from the Tuichang constituency. At 80 years old, he stands as the oldest candidate in the electoral competition. Tawnluia is against ZPM’s W Chhuanawma in the upcoming elections.
