At least four people died after a passenger train run over then while they were crossing the rail line at Chunar station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur. The victims did not use the available Foot Over Bridge, and instead were crossing the main line from the railway track, the railways said.

“Train no 13309 (Chopan – Prayagraj Express) arrived at Chunar Station Platform 4 (in Uttar Pradesh). Some passengers got down on the wrong side and were trespassing from the main line while Foot Over Bridge is available. Train no 12311 (Netaji Express) was through from main line. As reported, 3-4 passengers were run over by Train no 12311 (Netaji Express) at Chunar Main,” the Indian Railways said in a statement, as quoted by ANI.

This comes a day after a passenger train collided with a goods train killing at least 8 people in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur.

What exactly happened?

Officials said the passengers got off the Chopan Express on the track and were hit by the approaching Netaji Express. The Chopan Express had halted at platform number 4 of the station, and these passengers, reportedly all pilgrims, got down on the track, though there is a footover bridge, the railways said.

As they tried to cross the track, the incoming Netaji Express on the main line mowed them down, killing them on the spot.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences to the kin of the victims and directed officials to reach the spot immediately and expedite relief and rescue operations. National and state disaster response forces were ordered to rush to the accident site.
