BJP has won the Delhi MCD election 2017 with a massive margin. While the counting is still on, the party is expected to win around 180 seats out of 270 that went to polls on April 23.

Delhi MCD election 2017 was held on April 23 after a heated campaign by incumbent BJP and bitter rival AAP led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the control of EDMC, NDMC and SDMC. Congress was hoping to revive its fortune after hapless performances in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand elections.  After  AAP’s poor performance in Punjab and Goa assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal hoped to make inroads in Delhi’s civic bodies.

BJP vs AAP

Kejriwal had demanded that EVMs should not be used in these elections alleging that the machines were tampered with in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab Assembly elections. AAP also decided to show Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s video message in different parts of the city using projectors as part of its campaign strategy. Kejriwal was seen attacking the BJP-led MCDs over alleged financial irregularities.

A Delhi BJP delegation met State Election Commissioner SK Srivastava and sought his direction to remove the words “Aam Aadmi” from the names of the AAP government-run schemes, including mohalla clinics. The leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, who led the delegation, said ruling Aam Aadmi Party should not be allowed to use its official position during electioneering as the model code of conduct had come into force. The BJP leaders, including MLAs Jagdish Pradhan and OP Sharma, also handed over a memorandum of their demands to Srivastava.

Resignations

On the day of the result (April 26, 2017) Congress leader Ajay Maken offered to resign following poor results of his party in the MCD election 2017. AAP Delhi unit convenor Dilip Pandey also quit, while AAP MLA Alka Lamba offered to resign because failing to win seats in the civic body polls. A day after the result, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh resigned as the party’s Punjab in-charge over its drubbing in the state Assembly polls in February. However, it was not clear whether AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had accepted the resignations.

Important Dates

Elections to 270 wards of north, east and south municipal corporations were held on April 23 and the results announced on April 26. While NDMC and SMDC have 104 seats each, EDMC has 64 seats. Elections to two wards were canceled because of the death of two candidates.

Candidates

Fielding right candidates was a key issue. BJP decided not to field sitting councilors instead the party went ahead with new faces.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) replaced a candidate for the upcoming municipal corporation polls here after finding that a criminal case was registered against him. The party canceled candidature of Vijay Pawadia, who was declared AAP candidate from Dwarka for election to the municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD). “The party received a complaint about the candidate that he had a criminal case against him. On investigation, it was found to be true, so his candidature had to be canceled,” said AAP’s Delhi unit secretary Saurabh Bharadwaj.
