Maratha Reservation Latest News: Curfew has been imposed in Maharashtra’s Beed and Dharashiv after widespread violence by the Maratha quota agitators. Situation is under control, officials said on Tuesday. The decision to impose Section 144 under the CrPC was taken following incidents of vandalism were reported from these two districts. Homes of two NCP lawmakers were set on fire by the protestors.
Apart from this, the office of a BJP leader was also targeted. An Indian Express report say that around 50 people have been taken into custody after the Monday violence.
In another incident, a mob set fire to a panchayat samiti office in Jalna, the local police said on Tuesday. On Monday night, a group of supporters of the reservation, chanting “Ek Maratha Lakh Maratha,” arrived at the panchayat samiti office in Ghansawangi within the district. They vandalized the premises and ignited a fire. Prompt police response helped extinguish the flames, but important documents and furniture in two office rooms were damaged, according to an official from the Ghansawangi police station.
Not only political leaders, the protestors also pelted stones on the state-run buses. A PTI report said that the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has decided to suspend the bus services between two states till the situation normalises.
Meanwhile, Manoj Jarange Patil, the key figure in the latest phase of the Maratha stir, has demanded a special session of the Maharashtra Assembly over the issue. Patil has said that the state government should convene a special session to announce quota for Marathas. “We don’t want a half-hearted reservation. Our demand is that all the needy Marathas should get a Kunbi caste certificate,” Patil said after talking to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
