Amid news of fresh violence coming from Manipur, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday said that the issues of strife-torn state must be dealt with on priority. Addressing an event in Nagpur, Bhagwat said that there is an urgent need to ‘get over the election rhetoric’.

Bhagwat, who was addressing the RSS trainees at ‘Karyakarta Vikas Varg- Dwitiya’ programme, said that there was no violence in Manipur in the last 10 years, but the situation has changed for the worse. “Manipur has been waiting for a peaceful situation for the past one year,” Bhagwat said. “It looked like the gun culture had finally ended in this north-eastern state. However, violence has erupted ‘suddenly’ and this needs to be addressed without any delay, the RSS chief further said.

In May last year, violence erupted in Manipur between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Since then, approximately 200 people have been killed, and thousands have been displaced due to widespread arson that destroyed homes and government buildings. Recently, fresh violence has been reported in Jiribam over the past few days.

The fresh violence from Jiribam came amid reports of Manipur CM N Biren Singh’s pre-scheduled visit to the area. In last one week, Jiribam has reported fresh clashes.
