To avoid the overlap of arrangements in the ongoing festive season in Maharashtra, the state government on Thursday revised the date of the Eid-e-Milad holiday for Mumbai city and suburban districts. The holiday has now been shifted from Friday (September 5) to Monday (September 8). According to officials, the decision followed consultations with Muslim community leaders. “The change was made after Muslim community members in Mumbai decided to hold Eid processions on Monday,” a source told The Indian Express.
With large Ganesh Visarjan processions requiring heavy civic and police deployment, community leaders proposed postponing Eid processions to avoid an overlap of two major festivals. The state government accepted the proposal and issued a fresh circular.
The notification was issued in the name of the Governor of Maharashtra and directed to all departments and district authorities for immediate implementation.

Will schools remain closed tomorrow in Mumbai?
The General Administration Department clarified that the revised holiday applies only to Mumbai city and suburban districts. For the rest of Maharashtra, Friday will remain a public holiday for Eid-e-Milad.
The circular further noted that all government offices, schools and colleges in Mumbai and suburbs will function as usual on Friday. The offices and educational institutes will instead remain closed on Monday for Eid.
According to the authorities, staggering the events would help reduce pressure on the administration and allow both festivals to be celebrated smoothly. World over, Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations begin on the evening of September 4 and conclude on the evening of September 5.
