The election for Lok Sabha Speaker post is scheduled to take place on June 26 as announced by Lok Sabha in an official statement released on Thursday.
The statement said, “In pursuance of sub-rule (1) of Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure and conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, the President has been pleased to fix Wednesday, the 26th June, 2024, for holding the election to the office of speaker, Lok Sabha.”
At present the post of Lok Sabha speaker is held by Om Birla, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP. He was elected as the 17th Lok Sabha in June 2019, following a motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Birla was the BJP candidate for the Kota constituency, securing the Parliamentary seat with a margin of over 41,139 votes.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will be held from June 24 to July 3. This session will involve the oath/affirmation of newly elected Members. Rijiju stated, “The 264th session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3.”
On June 27 President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament.
