The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that there was “no foul play or interconnectedness” in the deaths of the five Indian students in the United States.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was speaking on the circumstances leading to the death of two Indian nationals and three people of Indian origin who had citizenship of the US.

Speaking about the recent attack on Mazir Ali, resident of Telangana’s Hyderabad, in Chicago, Jaiswal said that the Indian consulate in Chicago is in touch with the family.

“The Indian Consulate in Chicago is in touch with the family of Ali, who is a student in the US. We are trying to see how best to help him with medical aid and is also ensuring his well-being. I understand that the local police have registered a case and the consulate is there to provide all possible support,” Jaiswal said.

On Sunday, Syed Mazhar Ali, was allegedly attacked in Chicago, following which he issued a plea for help saying he was assaulted and robbed by four people who “kicked and punched” him. His wife, Syeda Ruquliya Fatima Rizvi, wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar requesting assistance to get him medical treatment.

Ali is pursuing a master’s degree student at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Speaking on the other deaths in the US, Jaiswal said that culprit in the death of Vivek Saini, who was killed by a homeless man inside a store in Lithonia, Georgia on January 29, has been arrested.

Jaiwal also said that there has been no foul play in the passing away of an Indian student in the University of Cincinnati, according to preliminary report. However, his medical report is awaited.
