Assault was pre-planned, says Police
Three of the four individuals arrested in the case had pre planned the assault, a senior police officer said on Monday. According to investigators from the nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), the accused – Monojit Mishra, Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed have a history of sexually harassing female students at the college.
The fourth accused in the case is a security guard employed by the institution.
Police said the trio would often record their acts on mobile phones and later use the footage to blackmail victims. “Our investigation has revealed that this crime was not spontaneous — it was planned over several days. The main accused had been targeting the victim from the very first day of her admission to the college,” the officer added.
Kolkata Police have launched a search for mobile phone videos allegedly filmed by the accused. “We carried out searches at the residences of Mukherjee and Ahmed on Sunday and are trying to locate videos that may relate to this and possibly other incidents,” the officer said.
Video clip of the June 25 incident
Investigators also suspect that a video clip of the June 25 incident may have been shared by the accused. “We are examining whether the footage was forwarded to others. If so, we will track down those recipients as part of our probe,” the officer said.
The SIT has compiled a list of over 25 individuals, primarily students of South Calcutta Law College, who were on campus on the evening of June 25. “Each of them will be questioned to understand what they may have witnessed that evening,” the officer added.
The case involves the alleged gangrape of a female student of South Calcutta Law College in the city’s Kasba area. Among the accused are two current students and one alumnus of the college.
