The officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, was brought to the special Crime Branch in Kolkata by the CBI following a medical test at BR Singh Hospital. Mondal, along with Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the medical institution.
Meanwhile, junior doctors continue their protest for the fifth consecutive night at Swasthya Bhawan in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, demanding justice for the victim.
On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Swasthya Bhawan to address the doctors, assuring them that their concerns would be resolved and action would be taken against those involved. The Chief Minister expressed her distress over their situation, stating that she had been losing sleep over the ongoing protest, which has continued despite harsh weather conditions.
“I have been a student leader myself and have struggled a lot in life, so I understand your situation. I don’t care about my position. It rained all night while you were protesting, and I was worried,” Banerjee said, promising a review of their demands. “Whoever is guilty will be punished. I ask for some time. The state government will not take any action against you.”
She also urged the doctors to return to work, emphasizing that efforts to improve the hospital’s development, infrastructure, and security are already underway.
The case revolves around the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student, which took place on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College.
