The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will consult experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on DNA and forensic reports related to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, officials announced on Tuesday.

In a bid to build a robust case, the CBI plans to send the forensic reports to AIIMS for expert analysis. This step aims to determine whether Sanjay Roy was the sole perpetrator or if other individuals were involved in the crime.

Currently, the investigation focuses on Roy as the primary suspect. However, the involvement of others will only be confirmed or ruled out based on the expert opinion from AIIMS.

The case has sparked widespread protests following the discovery of the medic’s body in the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department on August 9. The body, found by a doctor during a routine round, showed severe injury marks.

Kolkata Police arrested Roy on August 10 after CCTV footage showed him entering the seminar hall early in the morning on August 9. He was subjected to extensive interrogation, and medical examinations revealed recent injuries consistent with a struggle.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI. The CBI has since taken over forensic evidence and subjected several individuals, including Roy and former principal Sandip Ghosh, to polygraph tests for further leads.

The initial forensic reports from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) are being analyzed to guide the ongoing investigation. Polygraph tests, while not admissible in court, are used to assess the accuracy of statements from suspects and witnesses by monitoring physiological responses.
