Counting of votes in the Kerala local body elections show the Congress leading in a majority of seats in the Thrissur Municipal Corporation, one of the state’s key urban civic bodies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had secured six seats in the corporation in the 2020 elections, is currently leading in eight seats, indicating only a modest gain.
Thrissur has been closely watched in this election cycle, particularly as local MP and Union minister Suresh Gopi led the BJP’s campaign in the city.
Counting underway as Thrissur draws political attention
The Thrissur Municipal Corporation remains a major focus as Kerala. Polling for grama panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations was conducted in two phases across all 14 districts of the state. Vote counting began with postal ballots, followed by the counting of votes recorded on electronic voting machines.
Thrissur voted in the first phase of polling on December 11, along with Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Palakkad. The district recorded an overall voter turnout of 72.48 per cent, which was lower than the turnout in the 2020 local body elections.
Turnout dips slightly; corporation remains electorally significant
Within the Thrissur Municipal Corporation, voter turnout stood at 62.45 per cent, while district panchayat areas recorded a turnout of 73.68 per cent. The decline in participation compared to the previous local body polls has been noted across several parts of the district.
Thrissur Municipal Corporation is the third largest corporation in Kerala by area and the fourth largest by population. It administers over 101 square kilometres through 55 wards spread across five zones—Ayyanthole, Vilvattom, Ollukkara, Ollur and Koorkanchery—making it a politically and administratively significant urban centre in central Kerala
