Kerala has reported over 1,600 suspected dengue cases so far this month, a report by the Health Department has revealed. The state, on Friday, reported 1,693 suspected cases in July, with 493 being confirmed cases, the Health Department added.
The coastal state has also seen a rise in people seeking treatment for fever, with over 55,000 cases confirmed this month. On Friday alone, there were 11,438 fever cases, along with 330 suspected dengue cases, of which 109 were confirmed.
Malappuram district reported the highest number of fever cases, with 2,159 patients seeking treatment. Among the suspected dengue cases, Thrissur district registered the highest number with 62, while the Idukki district saw the highest number of confirmed dengue cases, with 31.
In 2024, so far, 22,959 suspected dengue cases have been registered, with 8,495 confirmed. For fever, 1,257,900 cases have been registered this year. A total of 22 people have lost their lives due to dengue in the state, with seven additional deaths due to fever.
The Health Department published these figures on their website after a delay of five days, so the numbers may have varied by the time of release.
Recently, the Kerala government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, held a meeting regarding amoebic meningoencephalitis, which caused two deaths and one hospitalization in the state this month. This rare disease, affecting 2.6 out of 1 million people, is caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, which affects the brain. It is a non-communicable disease spread by stagnant or running water sources.
