In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, the central government convened an all-party meeting to brief leaders across the political spectrum. During the closed-door session, sources revealed that the government acknowledged security lapses that contributed to the tragedy. A ruling party leader reportedly told Opposition members, “If nothing had gone wrong, why would we be sitting here?”
Opposition seeks answers, government responds
Opposition leaders questioned the absence of security forces and delay in response. “Where were the CRPF and the quick response teams?” asked several leaders. The government responded by noting that the Baisaran meadow, where the attack took place, was opened by local authorities without informing central security agencies—a breach of protocol, especially ahead of the Amarnath Yatra. Officials explained that the terrain required a 45-minute uphill trek, and standard operating procedures were not in place.
Full support for action
Union Ministers Amit Shah, Kiren Rijiju, and JP Nadda led the government’s briefing, reiterating a policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju said the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) decisions had been conveyed, with all leaders expressing full support. “The PM and government will take stringent action. The nation is united,” Rijiju stated.
Opposition calls for accountability
Leaders across party lines, including Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, and TMC’s Sudip Bandopadhyay, condemned the attack and pledged support. Kharge emphasized the need for Prime Minister Modi’s direct involvement, calling it a “security lapse” that demands accountability. Owaisi advocated international sanctions against Pakistan and stressed the need to end propaganda against Kashmiris.
Despite political differences, a rare consensus emerged. Leaders from NCP, AAP, DMK, BJD, TDP, and others backed the government’s stance. “We are on the same page with the Prime Minister. India is united,” said IUML’s Haris Beeran. BJD’s Sasmit Patra echoed, “All parties support actions to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Senior intelligence and Home Ministry officials also briefed the representatives of the political parties on enhanced security measures.
