The weather in Uttar Pradesh took a turn again on Monday, with overcast skies dominating most parts of the state. The cloudy conditions have brought down night temperatures and now daytime temperatures are also expected to dip from Tuesday onwards. The changing weather is being linked to a cyclonic storm forming over the Bay of Bengal, which could cause rainfall in several districts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm Montha in the Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea are jointly affecting Uttar Pradesh’s weather. These systems have led to cloud cover across the state, with light rain and drizzle reported in some districts.
IMD issues red alert for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
The cyclone is set to make landfall today, with Andhra Pradesh and Odisha placed on red alert. Authorities have begun precautionary evacuations and stepped up post-landfall readiness efforts.
According to IMD officials, the sea will remain rough along the Andhra coast from Nellore to Srikakulam, where waves could rise between 2 and 4.7 metres as the weather system intensifies into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning.
Rain and thunder forecast for western and eastern UP
On October 28, parts of both western and eastern UP may experience rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. The IMD has issued alerts for districts including Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Kanpur, Fatehpur, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya, Etawah, Mainpuri, Firozabad and Agra.
Over the next two to three days, the state may see a temperature drop of 3-4°C, with mornings turning foggy and chilly.
Chennai on high alert
As Cyclone Montha nears the Andhra coast, Chennai is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall and strong winds. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai and nearby districts, warning residents of potential flooding and disruptions through Tuesday.
The cyclone, currently about 350 kilometres east-northeast of Chennai, is already influencing weather conditions along Tamil Nadu’s coast.
Karnataka faces heavy rain and thunderstorms
The weather department has issued an orange alert in Karnataka for coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi, forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rain, and winds of 30–40 km/h.
A yellow alert is in place for other districts. Northern inland regions such as Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir may see heavy rain with thunder, while Bengaluru is likely to get light to moderate showers.
Weather scientists say Cyclone Montha will make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on the evening or night of October 28. After landfall, it is expected to weaken while moving northward, impacting southern and eastern UP between October 29 and 31.
