India Weather Today Highlights: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted an early onset of the south-western monsoon earlier this month for India. The depression in the Bay of Bengal is swiftly headed to the north-east towards Bangladesh and further north-wards to induce heavy rainfall near the cKoastal regions today. Rains in Kerala have put the entire state under an orange alert with Idukki, Kasaragod and Kannur under red warning signals. Waterlogging, thunderstorms and gusty winds are a constant feature across multiple states as per the weather today.
Kerala faces torrential rain
Idukki was struck with massive rainfall yesterday with waterlogged streets and landslide-like conditions, IMD has issued a red-alert for this district. Hit by heavy monsoon rains and triggering red alerts in multiple districts, the extreme waterlogging and landslides had forced schools to shut down in six districts. Surrounding regions receiving exceptionally high rainfall and avalanche warnings were issued. Authorities have issued warnings for residents in high-risk areas and activated disaster response protocols. Emergency teams are on standby, working to restore electricity and clear blocked roads. The IMD has predicted continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, keeping the state on high alert.
Rain prediction for today’s weather
There are over ten states with districts under an orange alert. Featuring thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and rainfall, regions like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi NCR have been issued an alert. In North-East, Dispur and Guwahati witnessed heavy rains and strong winds. As per the weather today, an IMD red-alert has been sounded in Tamenglong, Kokrajhar, Senapati and Khasi Hills among several other districts. Western state Rajasthan, too is under orange-alert, however, for thunderstorms, lightning and extreme heatwave conditions. A dust-storm paired with thunder and lightning is expected in regions like Jaisalmer, Alwar and Jhunjhun.
Waterlogging Update
Kerala reported massive waterlogging yesterday, May 29 while Mumbai faced major infrastructural damage in Khar, Santa Cruz and Colaba. The Worli metro station was completely flooded, which was merely inaugurated in January 2025. With schools closed and roads blocked, waterlogging due to heavy rains has disrupted lives of many.
