The relationship between Washington and New Delhi is consequential and far-reaching, said the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio in his Independence Day wishes to India. He said the two countries, the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy, are united by a shared vision of a “more peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region”. This comes amid strained India-US ties after President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods, and announced an additional 25% penalty for importing Russian oil.

“On behalf of the United States, I extend our congratulations and warm wishes to the people of India as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 15,” Rubio said in a statement.

Calling the relationship between the two countries “historic”, he added that the partnership goes beyond a few industries. “The historic relationship between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy is consequential and far-reaching. Our two countries are united by our shared vision for a more peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region.”

“Our partnership spans industries, promotes innovation, pushes the boundaries of critical and emerging technologies, and extends into space,” he added.

The US State Secretary further said that by “working together”, the United States and India will rise to the modern challenges of today and ensure a brighter future for both the countries.

India-US ties and Trump’s tariffs

The two countries are seeing a rift in their relationship after Trump blamed India for not letting the US enter certain sectors, and charging heavy tariffs on the US goods. He also said that India buying Russian oil is fueling the Ukraine conflict.

India later exposed the US and the European Union for their hypocrisy, and listed out the things they continue to import from Russia. India, in a message, said it would “not compromise” on its farmers, and would continue to take steps for its country and its economy.

Trump’s 50% tariff would take effect from August 27. On Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that additional secondary tariffs could be put on New Delhi if the objective of Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s meeting in Alaska is not achieved.

Meanwhile, US FBI director Kash Patel also extended his wishes to India on 79th Independence Day. He reshared PM Modi’s post on the highlights of Red Fort celebrations, and said, “Happy Independence Day India.”

PM Modi’s message to Trump and the world

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on the occasion of 79th Independence Day on Friday, PM Narendra Modi delivered a powerful message, stating that India will focus on Atmanirbharta (self-reliance)’. He highlighted how the country has achieved the objective in different sectors and can continue to do so with renewed focus on semiconductor production, energy sector and much more.
