Abhay Singh, popularly known as “IIT Baba”, was arrested on Monday in Jaipur for possession of marijuana, according to media reports. He has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Abhay Singh gained fame when he was spotted at the Mahakumbh, where he claimed to have studied Aerospace Engineering. An alumnus of IIT Bombay, he described himself as being on a “spiritual journey in search of truth”. He was banned from Juna Akhara camp on the grounds of abusing his ‘Guru’ during the recently-concluded Mahakumbh. However, reports suggest that a case had been filed against him but he was granted bail due to a small amount of procession.

During questioning, he identified himself as an Aghori baba and acknowledged using marijuana as part of his spiritual practices. The arrest comes after he was allegedly assaulted in a news debate recently. He complained about this incident to the police claiming that some saffron-clad people came, misbehaved with him and beat him with sticks.
