Several parts of Delhi were waterlogged on Sunday morning after a heavy rainfall and thunderstorms struck during the early hours. Major locations like Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and areas near Delhi Airport Terminal 1 bore the impact, with severe water accumulation obstructing movement. Cars were seen submerged in the Minto Road, highlighting the extent of the flooding in some places.
Delhi Airport issues advisories
Following severe showers and thunderstorms in Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International Airport has issued an advisory warning for flyers and has warn them of disruptions of flights schedules. In a social media post shared on X stated, “Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted”. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status regularly. According to PTI report, a total of 49 flights, including 17 international services were diverted from Delhi’s IGI Airport because of overnight intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Severe thunderstorms along with light rain predicted for Sunday
The India Meteorological Department has predicted severe thunderstorms along with light rain, dust storm, and hail storm for today, (May 25, 2025.) Maximum weather is expected to be between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius, and a minimum of 24-26 degrees Celsius. The IMD had issued a red alert for Delhi/NCR on Saturday. The forecast included a warning of strong thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds. As per the Weather Department, a thunderstorm cell was advancing from the west and northwest, which activated the alert.

The IMD has also predicted that wind speeds will be reaching 40-60 km/hr, along with stronger guts possible. “Thunderstorms with frequent lightning and dust-raising winds are likely to impact several areas,” the weather department stated.

“Thunderstorms with frequent lightning and dust-raising winds are predicted to impact several areas,” the Met Department mentioned. It also warned of moderate damage to crops like papaya and banana, and there is also a possibility of dust storms and a risk of falling trees.
Authorities have urged the residents to take precautions like avoiding going in open areas, not standing under the trees, and staying away from water bodies and weak structures. The officials advised to remain indoors.
The national capital has experienced turbulent weather conditions in recent days. On Wednesday, a dense cloud mass shifted from North Delhi to southern parts, leading to a dust storm with winds reaching 70km/kr. Light showers accompanied the storm, which also resulted in power outages in several localities.
As more such weather patterns are expected to occur, authorities are continuously monitoring the situation, urging the citizens to stay alert.
